New Hope, Pa. | $1,099,900

A cottage built in 1861, with three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, on a 0.8-acre lot

Mary Elizabeth Price, an Impressionist painter who once owned this house, called it Pumpkinseed because of its golden yellow color. Ms. Price, who was a member of the Philadelphia Ten, a group of female artists who showed together in the early 20th century, cultivated a garden on the grounds that included irises, peonies and poppies, using the flowers as inspiration for her paintings.

The house sits on the Delaware and Raritan Canal, near a walking trail offering views of the Delaware River and New Jersey. It is a 20-minute walk or a five-minute drive from shopping and dining in the center of New Hope. Trenton, N.J., the closest large city, is about half an hour away; driving to Philadelphia takes about an hour.

Size: 2,780 square feet

Price per square foot: $396

Indoors: From the driveway, a path runs along the canal to the front door, which opens directly into the living room. This space, which has hardwood floors, beamed ceilings and a stone fireplace flanked by built-in bookshelves, is currently used as a sitting and dining room.

The hardwood floors continue into a bright kitchen with high ceilings, a fireplace, antique granite counters, a commercial-grade Wolf range, a door to the side of the property and French doors that open to the backyard. A powder room is also in this part of the house.

The house has three bedrooms with en suite bathrooms — one on each level. The primary suite is upstairs, with an interior balcony overlooking the kitchen and a bathroom with a walk-in shower. Another bedroom is off the living room, on the main level, with a high, beamed ceiling, multiple closets and an en suite bathroom. The third bedroom, on the lowest level, has its own exterior entrance and a bathroom with a combined tub and shower. A laundry room is also on this level.

Outdoor space: A wood deck with a hot tub and a built-in barbecue is directly behind the house. It steps down to a fenced-in yard with a stone patio. There is room to park four cars on the long driveway.

Taxes: $7,164 (estimated)

Portland, Ore. | $1.1 Million

A 1918 Craftsman house with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, on a 0.1-acre lot

This house is in Laurelhurst, a neighborhood straddling the northeastern and southeastern sections of Portland, where many houses were built in the early 20th century. Part of the neighborhood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The 31-acre Laurelhurst Park, which has a duck pond, walking paths and open space for off-leash dogs, is about half a mile away. The public Laurelhurst School, serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade, is less than 500 feet from this home’s front door. Downtown Portland is about a 15-minute drive or a 30-minute trip on public transportation.

Size: 2,754 square feet

Price per square foot: $399

Indoors: The front door is set in a wide covered porch. It opens into a combined living-and-dining room with original woodwork, including built-in cabinetry flanking a fireplace and a built-in china cabinet with leaded-glass doors.

The kitchen, beyond, has been updated with stainless steel appliances and white cabinetry and counters. At the back of this space is a windowed breakfast room with a built-in banquette and desk.

Off the living room is a hallway that leads to a sunny guest room and a guest bathroom with a claw-foot tub.

Another guest room is on the second floor; it has an en suite bathroom with another claw-foot tub. Across the hall is the primary suite, which includes a bathroom with a walk-in shower and an additional room that could be used as a home office or nursery.

The basement level, which has built-in bookshelves and room for a sectional sofa, is currently used as a den. A laundry room is also on this level, with a sink and a stacked washer and dryer.

Outdoor space: The wood deck in back is big enough to hold a dining table and chairs. It is shaded by a mature tree that grows in the corner of the yard. Plans have been drawn up to turn the detached garage into an accessory dwelling unit.

Greensburg, Ky. | $1.1 Million

A brick house built around 1794, with five bedrooms and four bathrooms, on a 1.7-acre lot

This structure was once a schoolhouse run by William Mentor Graham, who tutored the young Abraham Lincoln. When the sellers bought it in 2005 it had been vacant for some time, after serving as a bed-and-breakfast. Subsequent renovations, which focused on preserving the building’s historic character, included replacing the old cedar-shake roof with a new one and reinforcing the original limestone walls around the property.

The house, which sits on a hill, has a view of the Greensburg courthouse a few blocks from Main Street. It is about half an hour from the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park and an hour and a half from Louisville, Ky.

Size: 3,327 square feet

Price per square foot: $331

Indoors: A flight of stone steps flanked by hedges and flowering plants leads up to the front facade, which is covered in Flemish-bond brick.

The front door opens into a living room with original yellow poplar floors and a gas fireplace with a wood mantel. The kitchen, beyond, has a large center island and a farmhouse-style sink. A full bathroom is off a hallway between the kitchen and the living room. On the other side of the kitchen is a dining room.

A staircase at the center of the main level leads up to three bedrooms on the second floor. One, which has a brick fireplace, is used as an office; next door is a bathroom with a walk-in shower. At one end of the hall is the primary bedroom, which has an en suite bathroom with a shower lined in marble tile. At the other end is another bedroom with an en suite bathroom that has a porcelain soaking tub.

Another bedroom is on the third floor, and the fifth bedroom is on the main level, off the living room.

Outdoor space: The sellers made extensive improvements to the grounds, adding a covered dining patio with a built-in kitchen, a stone fire pit and a free-standing half bathroom. The property also includes a gazebo and a long driveway lit by old-fashioned street lamps, with room to park several cars.

Taxes: $1,150 (estimated)
