Jaguars, Browns make first major trade of 2025 NFL Draft, as Jacksonville moves up for Travis Hunter

It didn’t take long for the first major trade of the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Jacksonville Jaguars moved up to No. 2 on Thursday to select two-way Colorado star Travis Hunter in a splash for a new regime led by first-year general manager James Gladstone and coach Liam Coen.

To move up, the Jaguars sent the Cleveland Browns pick Nos. 5, 36 (second round), 126 (fourth round) and a 2026 first-round pick. The Browns also sent the Jaguars pick Nos. 104 (fourth round) and 200 (sixth round).

Hunter, who played wide receiver and cornerback for the Buffaloes and Jackson State under the tutelage of two-time Super Bowl champion Deion Sanders, is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner and a unanimous All-American. He was The Athletic’s Dane Brugler’s No. 1 prospect in this year’s draft.

Hunter, 21, said earlier this month that he would quit football if the team that drafts him doesn’t let him play both offense and defense.

“It’s never playing football again,” Hunter told CBS Sports. “Because I’ve been doing it my whole life, and I love being on the football field. I feel like I could dominate on each side of the ball, so I really enjoy doing it.”

Hunter was the Buffaloes’ leading receiver with 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. He also led the team in interceptions, tallying four picks in 2024 and three in 2023 despite missing three games due to a lacerated liver.

A signature move for Coen’s first year

I fully expect Hunter to play mostly offense for the Jaguars under their offensive-minded coach, whose staff does not include an empowered defensive coordinator. This looks like a signature move for Coen. I would imagine Hunter will play some cornerback in sub packages and possibly get some work as a returner. His health will be a leading variable in whether he leans into more than one role. — Mike Sando, NFL writer

Good value for the Browns

All eyes will be on the Browns after passing on the unicorn that is Hunter, but in terms of draft capital exchanged, the Browns won this trade. The roster needs an infusion of talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball, and this trade allows them to do that the next two years and maybe even find their franchise quarterback in the 2026 draft class. — Austin Mock, NFL writer

A historical comparison

Jacksonville jumping from the fifth pick to the second pick resembles the Jets jumping from sixth to third in the 2018 draft. One notable difference: The Jets were moving up for a QB (Sam Darnold), while the Jaguars were moving up for a wide receiver who can play cornerback as well. The Jets gave up two second-round picks in that 2018 draft, plus a 2019 second-rounder, in that move. Jacksonville gave up second- and fourth-round picks this year, plus its 2026 first-round pick, while receiving fourth- and sixth-rounders this year. Deals with picks heading in both directions muddy the waters a little bit. I like Cleveland getting a 2026 first-rounder. — Sando
